Municipal and School Board Elections

The next Municipal and School Board Election will take place in October 2026. 

The Municipal Elections Act (MEA) is the legal framework that governs Municipal Elections in Ontario. The MEA outlines the procedures for the elections, such as nomination and voting processes, voter rights, and regulates fundraising functions and third party advertisements.

About the 2026 Municipal and School Board Election

In 2026, residents and property owners will be able to cast their vote in the Municipal and School Board Elections from anywhere with internet access or telephone service. This means residents will have the ability to vote from the comfort of their own home, on-the-go, at the Municipal Office, or at a Pop-Up Voter Assistance Centre - more information on voter assistance and voting locations will be available in 2026. 

Eligible voters (residents and property owners) will elect several different positions including:
• Mayor;
• Deputy Mayor;
• Five (5) Councillors (elected at-large); and a
• School Board Trustee

Once elected, members of Council serve a 4-year term. The current term of Council began in November 2022, and the next term of Council will commence in November 2026.

Important Dates for the 2026 Municipal Election

  • Nomination Period: Friday, May 1, 2026 (8:30am) to Friday, August 21, 2026 (2:00pm)
  • Third Party Registration: Monday, May 1, 2026 (8:30am) to Friday, October 23, 2026 (4:30pm)
  • Deadline for Withdrawal of Nominations: Friday, August 21, 2026 (2:00pm)
  • Voting Period: Advanced voting begins on September 26, 2026
  • Election Day: Monday, October 26, 2026 (ends at 8:00pm)

Interested in running for Council in the 2026 Election?

As per sec. 88(9.1) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, the Clerk shall make the financial statements of the candidates who filed a nomination available to the public in electronic format.  Compliance Audit Committee Roles and Responsibilities

The role of the Compliance Audit Committee is to review and consider compliance audit applications received by an eligible elector who believes that a candidate or registered third party advertiser has contravened a provision of the Municipal Elections Act relating to election campaign finances.

The Compliance Audit Committee can:

  • consider applications for a compliance audit and therefore grant or reject audit requests within thirty days of receipt;
  • if an audit is granted, appoint an auditor and review the audit report;
  • decide whether legal proceedings shall be commenced following the results of an audit; and
  • decide whether to commence a legal proceeding against a contributor for an apparent contravention, if applicable.

 In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, the Clerk is to prepare a report and make it available to the public. The report is to advise on the compliance of candidates with regard to filing financial statements. The Clerk is also to make available the names of any candidates who have defaulted by not filing their financial statement by March 31, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.
